From Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)- (to suck). Compare τιτθός (titthós, breast), θῆλυς (thêlus, female), θηλή (thēlḗ, teat), θεῖος (theîos, uncle), τήθη (tḗthē, grandmother) and τιθήνη (tithḗnē, wet nurse).
