χηλή
Ancient Greek
editAlternative forms
editEtymology
editOf unclear origin. Traditionally connected with χηρᾰμός (khērămós, “hole, hollow”), χήμη (khḗmē, “yawning, gaping”), and χάσκω (kháskō, “I yawn, gape”), but the supposed unifying connections are obscure.[1] Compare also χελώνη (khelṓnē, “turtle”), also of unclear origin, which could be related through Pre-Greek if it originally referred to the hard shell.
