From *alyapqïč (apron), synchronously equivalent to ал "front" + яп- "to cover" + -ҡыс "tool suffix".

Cognate with Tatar алъяпкыч (alʺyapkıç), Kazakh алжапқыш (aljapqyş), Kyrgyz алжапкыч (aljapkıc, apron).
