A collective term, from *bala-čaqa "children".

A geminate term: Proto-Turkic *bāla (child) + Proto-Turkic *čāka (child).

Cognate with Kazakh бала-шаға (bala-şağa, children), Kyrgyz бала-чака (bala-caka, children), Uzbek bola-chaqa (children), Uyghur بالا-چاقا (bala-chaqa, children), Crimean Tatar bala-çağa (children).
