First attested in c. 1140‒1160. Inherited from Proto-Slavic *bersto, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *berˀźta, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerHǵ-t-óm, from *bʰerHǵós (birch). Cognate with Old East Slavic бересто (beresto).
