Inherited from Middle Russian венгръ (vengr) (att. 1692), from Old Ruthenian венкгръ (vengr) (17th c.), from Middle Polish Węgier, from Old Polish Węgier, from Proto-Slavic *ǫgъrinъ of unclear origin. Doublet of у́грин (úgrin) (no-longer extant) and уго́рец (ugórec) (dated or dialectal).
