Etymology

edit

From книга (knyha, book) +‎ збір (zbir, assembly, gathering; collection). Either a shortened form of more common Ukrainian книгозбірня (knyhozbirnja, library) without the suffix -ня, or the original form from which Ukrainian книгозбірня (knyhozbirnja, library) derived, which is more likely. Since the word книгозбір means "book collection",[1] the suffix -ня could have been added to create a noun denoting a place or a collective noun, which is a common use of this suffix in Ukrainian.
