From Proto-Samic *kulëtēk, from Proto-Uralic *kule-. Cognates include Finnish kuulla, Komi-Zyrian кывны (kyvny) and Northern Mansi хӯлуӈкве (hūluňkve).

Sami cognates include Northern Sami gullat and Skolt Sami kuullâd.
