Inherited from Old Ruthenian нехай (nexaj, let), the second person singular imperative of Old Ruthenian нехати (nexati, to leave be, to let go, to abandon). Cognate with Czech nechť, Polish niech, Serbo-Croatian neka, Bulgarian не́ка (néka).
