Inherited from Old East Slavic о́смь (ósmĭ), from Proto-Slavic *osmь (8), from *òsmъ (8th), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *aśmas, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *oḱtṓwos, from *oḱtṓw (8).[1] Cognate with Russian во́семь (vósemʹ) (from Middle Russian восмь (vosmʹ), осмь (osmʹ)), Old Novgorodian осмъ (osmŭ), осъмъ (osŭmŭ) and Old Church Slavonic осмь (osmĭ).
