Etymology edit

From Ancient Greek πρωταγωνιστής (prōtagōnistḗs, a chief actor), from πρῶτος (prôtos, first) + ἀγωνιστής (agōnistḗs, a combatant, pleader, actor). With -і́ст (-íst) suffix. Compare Russian протагони́ст (protagoníst).
