Etymology

Coined during the 19th century during attempts to achieve independence from Tsarist Russian rule. The earliest known usage of this phrase was from a poem written by Taras Shevchenko, in the poem "До Основ'яненка" (To Osnovianenko) in 1840.

In an extended form, the salute consists of "Слава Україні, героям слава, слава нації, смерть ворогам" (Glory to Ukraine, glory to heroes, glory to the [Ukrainian] nation, death to [our] enemies).
