Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *torə. Possibly connected to Proto-Uralic *terä (“cutting edge; blade”). Compare Finnish terä, Hungarian tőr. Soviet era dictionaries somehow omitted this word, although it appears in earlier ones and is widely presented in folklore.
