Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *tulica, formed as ту́ля (túlja, “to sheath, to contain”) (dialectal) +‎ -ица (-ica). Akin to Old Church Slavonic тоулъ (tulŭ, “quiver”), Slovene tȗl, tȗlica (“quiver”), Serbo-Croatian ту̀љац (“quiver”), Russian тулья́ (tulʹjá, “type of hat”), Ukrainian відту́лина (vidtúlyna, “hole, hollow”).

Compare also Tulica (a river and a place-name in Central Bosnia), Tulnik (a village in Croatia).
