Traditionally derived from Polish turma, from Middle High German turm, from Old French *turm, from Latin turrem/turrim, accusative singular of turris. But more likely from Proto-Turkic *türmä ‎(prison); compare Tatar төрмә ‎(törmä, prison), Kyrgyz түрмө ‎(türmö, prison).
