From Proto-Mordvinic *jäŕkə, from Proto-Finno-Permic *jäwrä, ultimately probably borrowed from Proto-Balto-Slavic *jáuˀrāˀ (compare Latvian jūra (sea)). Cognates include Erzya эрьке (eŕke).
