A composite of Proto-Turkic *Kuĺ (bird) and Proto-Turkic *Kūrt (worm). See resp. ҡош (qoš) and ҡорт (qort) for further etymology.

Cognate with Kyrgyz кушкурт (kuşkurt, the animal world, wild animals).
