Etymology

edit

According to Ačaṙyan, a native Armenian formation meaning “darling, dear, having high value”, composed of *գարի (*gari) +‎ -ա- (-a-) +‎ գին (gin, price, value), the unattested *գարի (*gari) presumably meaning “expensive” or “heavy” and inherited from the Proto-Indo-European ancestor of Ancient Greek βαρύς (barús, heavy), βάρος (báros, weight), Latin gravis (heavy), etc. The problem is that the Proto-Indo-European root for these is reconstructed with an initial *gʷ- (see *gʷréh₂us), which in Armenian would have given կ- (k-). Ačaṙean suggest that we may be dealing with a *gʷ*gʷʰ sound change.
