Etymology edit

The origin is uncertain.

According to some, inherited from Proto-Indo-European via pre-Armenian *azgdʰ-, and cognate with Sanskrit सक्थि (sákthi, thigh, thigh-bone), Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬑𐬙𐬌 (haxti, thigh), Ancient Greek ἰσχίον (iskhíon, hip-joint).

Others compare to Ancient Greek ὀσφῦς (osphûs, loins, lower part of the back) and derive both from *h₃ésth₁ (bone) grown with the determinative *-dʰ-.
