Etymology edit

From աշխարհ (ašxarh) +‎ -ա- (-a-) +‎ կալում (kalum). The whole formation is a calque of Iranian: compare Parthian 𐫢𐫍𐫡𐫅𐫀𐫡 (šhrdʾr, lord (of the land), king), Middle Persian [script needed] (štr'dʾl /⁠šahr-yār⁠/, lord, sovereign, ruler, literally holding the world), Persian شهریار (šahryâr).
