EtymologyEdit

Reduplication of *գեղ- ‎(*geł-, to sing); compare գեղօն ‎(gełōn, song). Probably from Proto-Indo-European *gʰel- ‎(to call, chant). Less likely a Hittite borrowing: compare Hittite [script needed] ‎(galgal-ināi-, to make a musical sound).
