Etymology

A dialectal term that has been adopted as the standard designation of this plant and its berry in literary Armenian. Unattested in Old or Middle Armenian. The origin is unknown. Folk-etymologically explained as հաղ- (haġ-, grape) +‎ արջ (arǰ, bear), because bears like eating it.
