Old Armenian edit

Etymology edit

Borrowed from Semitic, perhaps specifically Classical Syriac ܙܝܬ (zēṯ), the absolute state of ܙܝܬܐ (zaytā, olive). See Hebrew זַיִת (zayiṯ, olive) for more. For the ձ- (j-) instead of զ- (z-) compare ձիւթ (jiwtʻ), ձանձախարիթ (janjaxaritʻ).

Noun edit

ձէթ (jētʻ)

  1. olive oil
  2. (transferred sense) oil of sesame, linseed, etc.
  3. olive (fruit)
    Synonym: ձիթապտուղ (jitʻaptuł)
    կթել ձէթktʻel jētʻto gather olives
