Etymology edit

The origin is uncertain. Compare similar words in other languages: Georgian პინჩვი (ṗinčvi, nostrils), Ossetian фындз (fynʒ, nose), Abkhaz а-ҧынҵа (a-pəncʼa, nose), Kabardian фӏыншэ (fʼənšɛ, palate), Egyptian fnḏ (nose). According to Hübschmann, the Caucasian words are borrowed from Armenian,[1] which would fit if the final syllable -vi in Georgian პინჩვი (ṗinčvi, nostrils) reflects the Armenian dual number found in պինչ-վը-ներ (pinčʻ-və-ner) of the Erzurum dialect.[2]
