From earlier *վարհան (*varhan), from Parthian *varhran, which is related to Avestan 𐬬𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬚𐬭𐬀(vərəθra, shield, obstacle, defensive power), Ossetian уарт (wart, shield) and Sanskrit वृत्र (vṛtrá, Vṛtra; defense; coverer), all ultimately stemming from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hurtra- (cover).
