Etymology 1 edit

From Parthian *vān-, from Old Iranian *wāhana- (habitation), from Proto-Iranian *Hwah-; see there for more. The Old Iranian word is cognate with Sanskrit वसन (vasana, dwelling, abiding, sojourn, residence).

Probably not related to the city-name Վան (Van).
