Etymology

From a Proto-Semitic root, cognate with Arabic كَفَّرَ (kaffara, “to cover, expiate, forgive”).

Verb

כיפר / כִּפֵּר • (kipér) third-singular masculine past (pi'el construction, future יְכַפֵּר, passive counterpart כופר / כֻּפַּר)

1. to cover
2. to pardon sin, forgive
3. to obtain forgiveness
   1. to expiate an offense
   2. to make expiation for an offender, to free from charge
   3. to appease one who has been injured, e.g. by paying a fee
