From Middle High German künicriche, from Old High German kuningrīhhi, from Proto-Germanic *kuningarīkiją. Equivalent to קעניג (kenig) +‎ רײַך (raykh). Compare German Königreich, Dutch koninkrijk, Danish kongerige.
