Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀓𑁆𑀔𑁄𑀝 (akkhoṭa), from Sanskrit अक्षोट (akṣoṭa). The خ (x) as opposed to the expected کھ (kh) is a hyperforeignism.
