From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (Balx), transposed from [Book Pahlavi needed] (bʾhl /⁠Baxl⁠/), apparently the Sogdian form 𐫁𐫆𐫓 (bẖl /⁠Baxl⁠/, Bactria) of Old Persian 𐎲𐎠𐎧𐎫𐎼𐎡𐏁 (b-a-x-t-r-i-š /⁠Bāxtriš⁠/, Bactria).
