From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (Balx), transposed from [Book Pahlavi needed] (bʾhl /Baxl/), apparently the Sogdian form 𐫁𐫆𐫓 (bẖl /Baxl/, “Bactria”) of Old Persian 𐎲𐎠𐎧𐎫𐎼𐎡𐏁 (b-a-x-t-r-i-š /Bāxtriš/, “Bactria”).
