Inherited from Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀭𑀸𑀡𑀲𑀻 (vārāṇasī), from Sanskrit वाराणसी (vārāṇasī).[1] Alternatively, named after the legendary figure of Rājā Bānār, who is said to have rebuilt the city.
