Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀪𑀕𑁆𑀕𑀢𑀺 (*bhaggati), a verbal derivation from Sanskrit भग्न (bhagna, broken, defeated, lost), from the root भञ्ज् (bhañj). Cognate with Nepali भाग्नु (bhāgnu), Gujarati ભાગવું (bhāgvũ), as well as Punjabi ਭੱਜਣਾ (bhajjaṇā) from a different derivation.
