From Middle Persian [script needed] (randīdan, to scratch, grate, abrade). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *lendʰ- (to lower, to go down).
Cognates include Baluchi رندگ (randag, to comb), and Ossetian рӕндун (rændun, to smooth, iron).
