Unknown or disputed. A legend claims to be inherited from Sanskrit लव (lava, Lava) +‎ पुर (pura, fortress; city), literally city of Lava, from Ramayana, a Hindu epic.[1] Compare Punjabi لَہَوْر (lahaur).
