Tool noun from the verb طَرَقَ (ṭaraqa, to hammer, to knock), from the root ط ر ق (ṭ-r-q). Alternatively, according to Fraenkel, borrowed from Aramaic מטרקא (mṭrqʾ), with طَرَقَ (ṭaraqa) being a denominative verb. In any case, related with the Aramaic word. See it for more.
