Etymology

From Middle Persian pldn' (parrīdan, fly), from Proto-Indo-European *prew- (to jump).

Cognates with Northern Kurdish firîn, Central Kurdish فْڕین (firrîn), Zazaki perayen, Baluchi پرگ (parrag, to fly away, jump off).

Other Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit प्रवते (pravate, to jump), Russian прыгать (prygatʹ), English frolic, and German fröhlich.
