Compare to Persian چلو (čelow, rice), itself borrowed from an Indic language, [1]derived from Prakrit 𑀘𑀸𑀉𑀮 (cāula).[2] Compare Urdu چاوَل (cāval) / Hindi चावल (cāval, rice), Punjabi چَول (caul) / ਚੌਲ (caul), Sindhi چانور (cã̄uru, grain of rice cleansed from the husk), and Odia ଚାଉଳ (cāuḷa).
