From Sogdian [script needed] (kwrδʾk), ܟܪܝܬܝ(/kurθē/). Cognate with Khotanese [script needed] (kuratu), Ossetian курӕт (kuræt). Compare also Classical Persian کرتک(kurtak), Northern Kurdish kurtek, kurtik, and the Iranian borrowings: Arabic قُرطَق(qurṭaq), Armenian կոռտիկ (koṙtik), քուրտիկ (kʿurtik), Georgian კურტაკი (ḳurṭaḳi), ქურთუკი (kurtuḳi).
