From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (kwlʾck' /⁠kulāčag⁠/, small, round bun), possibly related to کلوچ (koluč, lump).

The nature of the relation with Ancient Greek κόλλιξ (kóllix, roll or loaf of bread) and Proto-Slavic *kolãčь (type of bread, pastry), if any, is uncertain.
