Persian

Etymology

edit

Inherited from Middle Persian [script needed] (kwp-tn' /Kōftan, kōb-/, beat, pound, trash) + Middle Persian [script needed] (-ytn' /-īdan/, a suffix forming secondary infinitives), from Proto-Iranian *kaup- (to pound, beat), which appears to be exclusively Iranian. See also کوفتن (kuftan, to break, bruise).
