Etymology

Compare the Hebrew גֶּזַע (gézaʿ, “trunk”) and the Arabic جِذْع (jiḏʕ, “trunk”). The sense of "grammatical stem" is a calque of Arabic أَصْل (ʔaṣl).

     Bemoan and be frightened, all who are around him; and all who know his name, say "how the mighty sceptre and staff of splendour has been broken!".
