From the root ܚ-ܢ-ܢ (ḥ-n-n) related to pitying. Compare Hebrew חֲנִינָה (ḥănīnā), Arabic حَنَان (ḥanān, tenderness), حَنِين (ḥanīn, longing, nostalgia).
