From From an older form *ܐܲܗܠܵܐ (*ˀahlā) with a shift from the an /ʔ/ to /j/, from Aramaic אׇהֲלָא (ʾāhălā), from Proto-Semitic *ʔahl- (tent camp); compare Arabic أَهْل (ʔahl, kinfolk), Hebrew אֹהֶל (óhel, tent) and Akkadian 𒌷 (ālum, city, town).
