From Akkadian 𒈦𒃷 (MAŠ.GAN2 /⁠maškanu⁠/). Compare Jewish Palestinian Aramaic and Jewish Babylonian Aramaic מַשְׁכֹּונָא (maškōnā), Arabic مُسْكَان (muskān).
