From Aramaic פְּתִי (pəṯī, to enlarge, open wide), from Proto-West Semitic *pataw- (to spread; to seduce, beguile), from a biconsonantal root extended by reduplication in Proto-West Semitic *patat- (to make disintegrate, to cut piecemeal) and also seen in Proto-Semitic *pataḥ- (to open); cognate to Arabic فَتِيَ (fatiya, to be youthful) and Hebrew פִּתָּה (pitá, to entice, seduce).
