Disputed:
- Probably a denominal verb from ܬܲܦܩܘܼ (tapqū, “hap, coincidence”), from a metathesis of Arabic تَوافُق (tawāfuq, “coincidence; agreement”).
- Alternatively suggested to be a from a variant of the verb Aramaic נְפַק (nəp̄aq), argued to be dissimilated from its Ithpalpal form אִתְנַפַק (ʾiṯnap̄aq).
