Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘎𑘯𑘜𑘹𑘽 (kaḷaṇeṃ), from Sanskrit कलयति (kaláyati, counts, thinks). Cognate with Konkani कळप (kaḷap). Compare Odia କଳିବା (kôḷiba, to count, calculate).
