Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑀡𑁆𑀳 (kaṇha, Krishna), from Sanskrit कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kr̥šnás (black), from Proto-Indo-European *kr̥snós (black). Doublet of कृष्ण (kŕṣṇa). Cognate to Gujarati કાનો (kāno), કાનુડો (kānuḍo), Assamese কানু (kanu).
