Etymology
editOf uncertain origin. Has been considered as a vṛddhi derivative of टीका (ṭīkā, “commentary”), with taboo-influenced modification. Alternatively, borrowed from Semitic; compare Arabic كِتَاب (kitāb, “book”), whence Hindi किताब (kitāb, “book”).
