edit

Of uncertain origin. Has been considered as a vṛddhi derivative of टीका (ṭīkā, commentary), with taboo-influenced modification. Alternatively, borrowed from Semitic; compare Arabic كِتَاب (kitāb, book), whence Hindi किताब (kitāb, book).
