From a merger of Sanskrit त्रिपाद (tripāda, tripod) and Classical Persian سه پای (sih-pāy, tripod). Corresponding ultimately to Proto-Indo-European *tréyes (three) +‎ *pṓds (foot). Cognate to Bengali তেপায়া (tepaẏa).
